Creating Inclusive Opportunities: The Entrepreneurial Training Center

Arizona Autism Charter School’s Essential Piece Enterprises Entrepreneurial Training Center is dedicated to empowering young adults on the autism spectrum by preparing them for their future careers through hands-on training in four operational businesses. The first floor of the building, spanning approximately 12,000 square feet, has been remodeled to include four distinct training suites, each designed with the unique needs of individuals on the autism spectrum in mind.

The north suite functions as a retail shipping service and electronic device repair shop, equipping participants with practical skills in these fields. The two central suites offer versatile spaces for classroom instruction, training sessions, conferences, and office work, fostering a comprehensive learning environment. The south suite features a vibrant coffee shop and retail space, complete with a dedicated silk-screening room, providing diverse vocational experiences.

DFDG approached this project with a deep understanding of the sensory sensitivities often experienced by individuals on the autism spectrum. The design prioritizes soothing, distraction-free environments by addressing common triggers related to lighting, colors, and sound. Utilizing simple, repetitive materials and colors, the spaces are crafted to enhance familiarity and comfort. Each suite is thoughtfully partitioned to minimize distractions while maintaining sightlines for instructors to effectively monitor and support participants.

To mitigate the distracting and disruptive effects of traditional electrical lighting, the design maximizes natural light throughout the space. Supplementary LED lighting was carefully selected to minimize sound and flicker, creating a calm atmosphere conducive to focus and learning.

Through these intentional design choices, the Entrepreneurial Training Center aims to foster an inclusive and supportive environment where young adults on the autism spectrum can thrive, develop valuable career skills, and confidently step into their future careers.
