Phoenix College’s Building G has undergone a remarkable transformation, blending thoughtful modernization with the preservation of its historic charm. The renovation focused on updating key interior spaces, including locker rooms, showers, training rooms, restrooms, and circulation areas, resulting in a fresh and functional design.
One of the highlights of this renovation is the restoration of the building’s original south gym wood beams, which were hidden beneath ceiling tiles since the late 1960s. These beams have been carefully revealed and enhanced with tectum panels, honoring the architectural legacy while adding a contemporary touch.
The project also included minor adjustments to accommodate concealed fire protection systems as well as substantial updates to HVAC infrastructure, ensuring the facility meets today’s safety and efficiency standards. These upgrades, along with the structural integrity provided by the masonry bearing walls, precast concrete double-tees, and waffle-slab roof, reinforce Building G’s standing as a durable and resilient facility.
This partial remodel balances practical improvements with a deep respect for the building’s history, turning Phoenix College’s Building G into a vibrant space that supports students and staff while celebrating its rich architectural heritage for generations to come.
