Modernizing Tempe's Police Headquarters and IT Department for Enhanced Efficiency

To align with the City of Tempe Police Department’s strategic plan, DFDG undertook comprehensive renovations of Police Headquarters and the IT Department to incorporate the latest technology and functionality. This project aimed to create a state-of-the-art facility that meets the diverse needs of various stakeholders, including homicide, theft, patrol, and K-9 units.

Special design considerations were made to comply with Homeland Security and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) protocols. A key feature of the renovation is the sophisticated intelligence command center, equipped with a flexible window design. These windows can switch between transparent and opaque states, providing visibility to nearby intelligence offices or serving as marker boards. The command center also includes a smart board and an interactive video display for live media feeds or direct computer integration.

The renovation also introduced two separate evidence rooms: one for general evidence and a specialty room for drugs. The drug evidence room has enhanced security measures to limit access. One significant challenge was designing a facility that also houses a court and jail. During construction, a secure path was created from the jail to the court, ensuring safety and privacy. Additionally, screen walls were designed to partition off sight lines from the court through the Police HQ private lobby, preventing public visibility of undercover officers.

Other amenities include support spaces, break rooms, a fitness center, specialized lockers, a data center, and a data analysis center. These features collectively contribute to a more efficient and secure environment for the Tempe Police Department.

This renovation project not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures that the Tempe Police Department is well-equipped to meet modern safety and security challenges.
