Revitalizing Glendale's Community Centers: An Imaginitive Upgrade

The City of Glendale’s three main community centers have long been recognized for a diverse range of programs catering to multi-generational users. After 20-40 years without renovations, it was time to give these centers a much-needed upgrade. Working closely with the City of Glendale, DFDG conceptualized visions for its main centers: Glendale Community Center, O’Neil Recreation Center, and Rose Lane Recreation Center.

The Glendale Community Center underwent a remarkable transformation, focusing on revitalizing the dated post-modern exterior to create a welcoming neighborhood landmark. A previously completed interior refresh allowed the team to focus on adding shading canopies, a new entry storefront, and an overall contemporary architectural design that blends seamlessly with surrounding residences. Basketball enthusiasts can now play on a new concrete basketball court with privacy fencing complete with a large-scale solid shade canopy.

Similarly, the O’Neil Community Center underwent significant interior modifications, including a kitchen remodel, the addition of secure lobby spaces, a restroom, a security desk, and an office. DFDG’s vision brought the 1980s-era post-modern architecture into the present, creating a welcoming and pride-inducing space for the neighborhood.

Rose Lane Community Center received a nearly 5,000 square feet interior facelift, establishing a new identity. A generous shade canopy with a simple and elegant vertical shading element facing the public provides a clear identity and welcoming entry to the space. At the same time, the interior refresh brings a bright, refreshing quality to the space with strategically placed splashes of color, enhancing the overall appeal of the center.

With these updates, Glendale’s Community Centers can continue providing exciting, educational, and enjoyable experiences for the entire community in newly updated and welcoming spaces. From youth and teen programs to adult and senior activities, the centers offer diverse recreational, fitness, and educational opportunities, contributing to a vibrant and engaged community.
